On a violent former husband
or wife, please see lower down
in this page.

If you have been married before and want to get married
in the Catholic Church, the Catholic Church will need
to look at your previous marriage to see whether
it is possible for you to marry in the Catholic Church.

If either you or the person you want to marry for your
second or subsequent marriage is Catholic, you will
need to follow Catholic rules to find out whether you
can marry in the Catholic Church. This is true whether
or not you youself are Catholic and whether or not the
person whom you married before is Catholic.

The Catholic Church has offices that look into this. If you
are Catholic, speak to your parish priest to find the
contact information for the office you need. If you aren't
Catholic, contact the Catholic Church to find out
whom to contact. Here's the contact
inforrmation:
Conference of Canadian Catholic Bishops

In your question say in which town and Province or
Territory you were married and explain that you want
the contact information for the Diocese that includes
where you were married. Once you have received the
contact information for the Diocese, contact the Diocese
and explain that you are looking for the contact
information for the Marriage Tribunal in that
Diocese.

The most common way of examining a previous marriage
is to see whether you can get a so-called 'annulment'.

Please note: even if your
husband or wife in the
marriage you are wanting
to deal with so that you
can remarry is violent,
the husband or wife still
must be contacted in
the procedure to see
whether you can remarry
in the Catholic Church.
There is no way round
this. This rule has been
set in Rome by the highest
level of authority. Our
experience has been that
it is almost impossible to
hide where you live or
work from someone
who is determined to
find you and/or your
children.
